Suri alpacas are a unique member of the camelid family. Their fiber hangs in long distinctive locks parallel to their bodies. This creates the graceful appearance of the animal when in comparison to the huacaya breed. Suri locks are lustrous and slick to the touch. Because of the exquisiteness of suri fleece it is in high demand and brings premium prices in the fiber and fashion markets. The word "suri" itself originated from the Aymara language as a word to describe the lustrous quality of the feathers of a South American cousin of the Ostrich. As far back as 20,000 years ago suri alpacas has left their mark on the world and its people. This breed of alpaca has appeared in jewelry, textiles, and pottery of ancient Andean peoples living way up in the Andean mountains of Peru. Today suri alpaca makes its mark by having a softness that rivals cashmere, luster of fine silk, the weightlessness of down and the dense fibrous characteristics similar to that of wool. Because it combines so many high quality aspects of a range of other animal (protein) fibers it blends well with any fiber and is produced into high end garments and domestic textiles and upholsteries.
